My first reaction to this idea would be to consider it a brilliant stroke of electoral strategy. If you combined the support for Trump with the support for Kennedy, then you are moving into the mid-fifties range. Most certainly it would push many of the conservatives and independents who like Kennedy to Trump. They might see the choice of VP as somehow validating their feelings about Robert and reward Trump.

But then I consider that it might drive some of the disengaged Democrats back to Biden. Perhaps they vote Biden rather vote for Trump just because Kennedy in on the ticket. They may be more anti-Trump than pro-Kennedy. It is also really hard to say how many Democratic Kennedy voters are Kennedy fans or otherwise just not a fan of Biden.

At the end of the day, does it help or hinder the Trump ticket? Polling is not consistent to what degree Kennedy is looking to impact the race if he runs as an independent. It's also unsure how many actual states he can get on the ballot. Democrats will certainly do everything that they can to keep him off the ballot (as they are currently doing to Jill Stein as well). I guess at this point if we do not know how he impacts the race as an independent, its equally hard to determine how he impacts the race if he were to become Trump's running mate.

Right now, Trump looks good. Even after being found guilty of sexual assault and his namesake business being found guilty of fraud, he only looks to get stronger. Whether an actual "criminal" conviction changes that is anyone's guess. But for now, perhaps Trump's best strategy is to not upset the apple cart. But then again, this is Trump we are talking about.
