I think the initial reaction may be worse than what we will hear about over the next couple of weeks.
I saw an initial poll that suggested Trump won by around a 3-1 margin (approximately 75-25) which just goes to show you that some people will support a candidate regardless of the performance.
The current play from team Biden is that Joe just had a cold and that you should believe that he is still really sharp behind closed doors. Most of the observations from the left was split between some form of defense of the President versus those who are literally calling on him to drop out. Many are pointing to the various "falsehoods" made by President Trump and demanding that on the issues Biden comes out ahead. Pretty much everyone acknowledges that Biden made some gaffes, but to some of these people a Biden gaffe or two is not as bad a Trump lie. However, even CNN and other outlets were decrying the performance.
I was actually hoping for a slightly better performance from Biden, just to make sure there was not an increased call for him to drop out. I am not sure the Democrats have a viable fallback option and the civil war between those who feel that it will Kamala's turn to take the baton when the time comes versus those who don't believe she can win would be epic. Who replaces Biden? Newsom? Obama? Clinton? Kennedy?
Honestly, from what I can tell from the reactions and highlights, it wasn't just that Biden was bad, but that Trump was actually good. Probably helped him that they turned off his mic and possibly even helped that there was no audience for him to play to. Trump has always been his own worst enemy and offsets his remarkable media talents by being obnoxious. Perhaps he finally outgrew all of this, and became a more mature Donald Trump as he closes in on 80 years young.
Furthermore, at the end of the day, it will be up to Biden and his insiders to make the call. Unless he literally drops out, there is no "real" manner for the Democrats to ignore their own primary and not give him the nomination. One thing about the Democrats is that they do not like to fight each other, and their best move has always been to circle the wagons. Unless you see some serious Democrats (politicians and not media) making statements about replacing Biden, I think they decide to suck it and circle up.
Trump very likely won't be #47, Kamala my slip in first. God help us until it's Trump #48.

Looks like CHT's favorite "economist" is pulling the plug:
Your comment about shutting off the mics helped Trump with moderates is a good one. I agree.
And who is running our country? It's not Joe Biden. He can't even find his way off stage. If this was any republican there would be rioting in the streets to remove him.
