Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin states that Walz not only knew they were deployed when he retired, but that he went around him to get permission to do so.
Sounds like the timeline is even longer and busier than we have known. The first notice was provide in the fall of 2004. They were holding meetings about the potential deployment for months. Julin stated that Walz told him at one of these earlier meetings that he had put his hat in the ring for a congressional seat. Later he told him at another meeting regarding the deployment that he was not confirmed as the candidate and would be going to Iraq with them. This was all prior to the official notice of potential deployment that came in March.
In May is when Julin was told by another Guardsman that Walz had put in for retirement and would not be going to Iraq. Apparently Walz didn't even have the curtesy to face Julin and tell his commander that he had quit. Julin stated that Walz went two steps over his head and cleared his "retirement" with upper brass. Julin also suggested that had Walz asked for Julin for his permission to retire, that Julin would have rejected it as too late in the game to replace him as the top commanding enlisted man. They had already received a notice of sourcing (which is the determination to keep your units in place). Julin suggested that this is likely why Walz went around military procedure, and referred to it as a good old boys thing.
It was right around then, that the CNN reporter abruptly ended the interview, suggesting that they really wanted to hear what Julin had to say, but that CNN was having audio issues and they really wanted to respect "his" time.
The liberal press trying to run cover for Walz is doing exactly what the Star and Tribune and others have done. Ignore the various specifics of the multiple notices of potential deployments, declare that he retired prior to the official deployment order, and suggest that he was "entitled" after 20 years to retired. Some are still trying to argue that Walz put in for his retirements "months" prior to any alert being given. Of course, that would have meant that he hid is retirement from his battalion and let everyone believe that he was going with them for months when he knew he wasn't. Not sure that argument is any better.
