USSC upholds South Carolina congressional map

Apparently, there is a difference between partisan gerrymandering and racial gerrymandering.

So according to ruling there is no constitutional issues with partisan gerrymandering, and the determination was that this was partisan gerrymandering rather than racial gerrymandering. So apparently everything is peachy!

Personally, I am not sure I would agree with the logic here. I would be more likely to suggest that partisan gerrymandering that carves up districts like a jigsaw puzzle to provide partisan advantages should be unconstitutional, while the idea that anyone can guarantee racial equality in districts seems farfetched. If you are a White politician in a black district, are you prohibited from running? Are the non-black people living in a "black district" unentitled to any say in anything? Moreover, I have yet to see a district carved out that provided for an Asian district, or an Indian district, or even a Hispanic district. Seems the only type of district we need to create is a Black district.

Either way, I am glad that the USSC undermined the lower court's decision to step in here. I believe (as does Justice Thomas base on his concurring opinion) that ultimately these should be legislative decisions not subject to judicial review as if the judicial branch is a teacher grading the legislative district maps and changing them to their own liking. While this was not the argument of the majority, they at least got the result correct.
