Another sign that the US is losing the war I suppose?
According to all sources, there was a heavy firefight in the area. Apparently, the location became public knowledge and everyone and their brother was trying to get to the pilot. A race for time was what someone suggested.
Of course, the U.S. forces got there first, probably set up defenses surrounding the area, and likely that the upper hand in any tactical battle. I am sure pilots are trained to get to the optimal spot to be rescued, which would include finding something that could be easily defended. In this case, he apparently scaled a bluff of some sort and gave his forces the literal upper hand.
Reports are that many members of the Basij militia were there fighting against (and losing against) the U.S, Special Forces who were sent to rescue the pilot. Reports also suggested that many members were hospitalized or killed. Calls for blood donations and extra doctors were high in the area and came from local leadership, basically acknowledging that things didn't go well for them there.
Obviously, this could have turned out differently and the pilot could have been captured. That would no doubt have been a bad thing. Possibly even a momentum changing thing. The US rescuing the pilot rand killing a bunch of insurgents in the process feels like another reason to suggest that the Iranians are in over their heads trying to fight against the U.S. Forces. They definitely seemed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on this one. But U.S. Special forces against a rag-tag Iranian militia was never going to be a fair fight, just as this war is not a fair fight, regardless of what the clueless are saying.
