Why should Israel be the only one to have an iron dome?

President Trump has ordered the development of a next-generation missile defense system he likened to Israel’s Iron Dome in an executive order he signed on Monday that described ballistic missiles and other advanced aerial weapons as “the most catastrophic threat facing the United States.”
But experts immediately raised questions about whether an Iron Dome-style system was feasible for the United States, which is more than 400 times the size of Israel.
So the question really isn't a simple can it be done or not. The real question is to what degree could it be done? Could it be done for instance to protect Washington DC? Could it be done to protect individual cites? Not sure there is a need to protect vast areas of the country where there is little or not population as those areas would never be targeted. Also, what sort of missiles does this type of defense really protect against? It obviously does little good to explode a nuclear warhead unless it can be intercepted pretty early or at the highest peak. On the flip side, the sort of missiles being used in the Middle east are only designed to go so far. We don't really have a border enemy that is sending those sorts of missiles at our country.
Either way, maybe it is just me, but I think we might have better luck asking Elon to put a team together to see if he can create a system. Might be faster and cheaper than relying on the US government to get it done.
I'm with you on getting the brightest person/people to work on this and define what the correct question is.
