After starting out strong, the Zuckerberg Meta version of Twitter has seen a drop of user activity by 50%....
What are the complaints from all those liberals who were dying for an echo chamber that would ban all of the bad people so they wouldn't have to see any evil conservative opinions??
Ironically, the main complaints are that Threads is being too restrictive with content moderation and that too much information and too many users are being banned. Sure there are some bugs here and there, but the main issue is that people are walking on eggshells in fear of being the next person censored or banned.
So what is the appropriate lesson to be learned here?
How about be careful what you ask for?
The reality is that the snowflake liberals who cannot handle the wild wild west of free expression on a platform like Twitter, will still demand that people are censored and banned. It's literally what some of them live for. The only way they truly prove anyone wrong is by getting that opinion "banned". If nobody is disagreeing with you 180 degrees, as you might see on Twitter, someone is probably still disagreeing around the edges.
A classic argument about something in the Supreme Court on twitter might be whether the Court and recent decisions are good or bad. On Threads, two snowflakes might agree that the court is bad, but end up arguing about whether the best solution is term limits or packing the court. One or both will eventually become offended and demand that the other opinion is literal violence and want it censored. You can almost see them "literally shaking" over the disagreement. Their only solution to this disagreement? Yep, to report that person to the proper authorities for having a differing opinion from you.
Oh and guess where these people will go once they are censored or banned from Threads? Yep right back to Twitter, where they have never been censored or banned. They might end up having to see a horrible opinion from time to time, but at least they have a forum and isn't that the point of all of this?
I was never too inclined to believe that Threads would take over the Twitter arena. Between Mastodon, Parlor, Truth Social, and others who have tried to create a new Twitter, none of them have actually undermined Twitter. Sure, people might have opened accounts on these platforms. But as I found as I set up shop on Parlor, most of what you see is duplicated posts of what they are posting on Twitter.
Ultimately very few people not named Donald Trump Sr literally move to a different platform and leave Twitter. Even Don Jr is still active there. People just added a new account on a new platform and echoed what they were doing on Twitter. The question that Zuckerberg will need to answer is why is this an appealing situation? Why does anyone need to read the same thing twice? What will he offer that the other Twitter wannabes are not offering? I am sure he thought there was a market for the snowflakes who need a mommy to watch over everything. I think he overestimated the maturity level of his client base and how they would react to being put in time out themselves. You see, that never happened to them on Twitter. Being on the banned part of the banning makes you think differently about free speech. Ultimately Zuckerberg might end up inadvertently proving Musk's open forum strategy right.
Don't look at "Truth" much (just Trump) but do spend a little time on GAB and it has some content I don't see elsewhere:
TommyRobinsonOfficial on Gab: 'Temecula School Board in California getting hit wi…'
Royce Chamberlin on Twitter: "Zuck hasn’t even used his own app is four days!! Makes me appreciate how active @elonmusk is on Twitter. https://t.co/lLBwGANZGl" / Twitter
What it also gets down to is some of the most interesting people in the world are on Twitter. And people want to hear what they have to say. Tucker doesn't post often (pretty much weekly) but his impact is staggering. Musk tweets often. Don't know if he ever sleeps.
He is also rapidly expanding the function of Twitter including monetization.
Long live Twitter !!!
and may the best man win.
