The CFP committee snubs undefeated power five champion?

Proving that there is no reason to even play the games...

You are an undefeated power five college football team currently ranked in the top four of college football going into conference championship weekend.

You win your conference championship by ten points with your third string quarterback (expecting to get your second stringer back or the next game). You hold your opponent (a top 15 team) to 188 yard in total offense with 7 sacks and 14 tackles for losses.

On top of that, one of the three teams ranked ahead of you loses their conference championship game, leaving you as one of only three undefeated power five conference champions. Your ticket to the playoffs is set in stone. Or so everyone should think.

Until the committee decides to move the previously 7th and 8th ranked one loss teams ahead of you (also bypassing the 6th ranked team who was idle) into the college championship playoffs.

What... the.... hell?

The truth is that under any reasonable rules of logic, fair play, or decency is that the top three teams in the college football playoffs are Michigan, Washington, and Florida State. You could conceivably flip Michigan and Washington, but Florida State (by virtue of beating three ranked teams in an undefeated season) has to be third. Three National Championship teams in the modern era have won with a backup quarterback. The idea that an injury (that did not cause any losses) should remove an undefeated team from the playoffs is asinine. Florida State deserves to play for the title because were not beaten.

That is the ENTIRE concept of playing a season.

Let me go on record in saying that I am not a fan of Florida or Florida State or Florida football in general. I am a fan of principles and sometimes those principles determine that a team I don't like should get in despite my personal feelings.

But the problem for the committee is obvious. That only gives you one spot left and that spot deserves to go to Texas, as the best one loss conference championship team. Texas beat the SEC one loss champion Alabama by double digits in Alabama. They gained 660 yards in their conference championship and scored 35 points in the first half. How it should look is simple:

  • Michigan (1) vs Texas (4)

  • Washington (2) vs Florida State (3)

But quite obviously the committee didn't like this for one simple reason. Not because these four teams are not the right four teams based on any concept of sports playoffs, they are. They didn't like it because the right thing to do leaves the glory conference of the SEC out of the mix. Moreover, because the committee has one rule that they have never gone against (head-to-head) they cannot just drop Texas down and put Alabama ahead of them. Instead, they have to bump an undefeated team down and allow two previously ranked 7 & 8 ahead to be placed ahead of an undefeated team that went into the week ranked 4th. They had to use an even more extreme move to uphold an obvious rule that they were almost forced to follow.

What is the excuse they will give? I guess we could argue that either Texas or Alabama might be favored over Florida State on a neutral field. But as one analyst pointed out, if we used that test, the suggestion was that one loss Ohio State would likely be favored over all three in a matchup. Nobody considered Ohio State as the fourth team. Moreover, Georgia might actually still open as a favorite over Alabama if they played a second time and likely would be favored over Texas as well. But that eye test only works when it is convenient.

All of that, of course, is speculation and guesswork as to whom might beat whom and in no other sport would any of that subjectivity matter. The CFP was created in order to put objectively ahead of subjectively and allow for things to be settled on the field. That didn't happen in this case. Instead, they put conference "reputation" and almighty dollar ahead of basic principles.

Boy, isn't that the truth!

As they say... if you question conventional wisdom and dare to do your own research, you are no longer better informed... you are a conspiracy theorist!
