Apparently an attendance at a law school banquet is not allowed if you are a Judge?
“Federal Judge Aileen M. Cannon, the controversial jurist who tossed out the classified documents criminal case against Donald Trump in July, failed to disclose her attendance at a May 2023 banquet funded by a conservative law school,” ProPublica reports.
So at issue is an event that apparently honored the late Justice Scalia. The reasoning for why this would need to be reported to anyone seems lacking. Generally Judges would be required to disclose if they attended an event where they were compensation for their attendance, or if the event would pose a conflict of interest. But it sounds like Cannon was simply invited to come, was not a speaker, and was not compensated for her appearance.
What appears to be the case here is that the law school is "conservative" and the event honored a "conservative" judge, which would (of course) be seen by liberals as something of a conflict of interest. You cannot be seen to be conservative without some form of punishment. I am sure they would not feel the same way if a liberal Justice went to an event at Harvard that honored Justice Ginsburg, as that would be perfectly acceptable.
