But was it all just a big misunderstanding?
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was arrested by police in Louisville on Friday morning on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was led to a police car and charged with assaulting an officer after allegedly attempting to drive around traffic backed up from a pedestrian fatality investigation. Scheffler was released later in the morning and continued competing in the tournament.
Police said Scheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. In a statement to CBS News, Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines said the golfer "never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle" and added that "we will litigate this matter as needed."
Scottie Scheffler is the most dominant golfer on the planet, and we may have never seen anyone quite his dominant. In his past ten starts, he won four times, and only once finished outside of the top ten. Those are stats that would make Jack and Tiger blush in shame. After being arrested he still managed to shoot a 66 and is in fourth place at the PGA Championship.
Apparently, the story was that it was dark and raining and there was a fatal car crash that was blocking traffic into the club. Several golfers were in traffic and eventually PGA marked vehicles were directed to go off the road and around the traffic in order to get into the Major Championship. There was apparently some confusion about whether or not Scheffler was properly following instructions. Scheffler insists he was trying to do what was being asked of him by other traffic officers when he was approached by another detective. It sounds like a detective was holding on to his SUV when he started to move and was pulled to the ground and suffered injuries.
The interesting thing here is that Scheffler did not once use the "do you know who I am" angle and fully cooperated while being arrested and sent to jail. He spent his time in jail warming up and stretching to get ready to play if given the chance.
Ten to one says the detective gets an injury settlement from Scheffler and the charges get dropped. Everyone says that besides being a great golfer that Scottie Scheffler is a great guy as well. I don't believe anyone thought Scheffler was trying to hurt anyone.
