Some buzz about some promises to hold hearings on legislation regarding ACA subsidies and certain projects that the President has put on hold.

I find it odd that people are still talking about Covid subsidies, this long after Covid stopped being a thing. Nobody is laid off or furloughed because of Covid in 2025, so it just calls attention to how absurd some of these subsidies really are. But temporarily "extending" the Covid subsidies, with the tradeoff of lowering the income levels where they fall off is something that a handful of Congress critters are apparently discussing. Now whether this is a serious discussion (or wishful reporting) or whether it is something like that makes it past a 60 vote threshold, or can make it past a potential Presidential veto is another question.

Right now the polling suggests that this isn't really harming either party. It seems to be fairly close to being split into thirds, with some blaming the GOP, some blaming the Dems, and some blaming both. A CBS poll (we know how biased they are) - showed it at 39% Republicans, 30% Democrats, and 31% both. Given how many people on the left are knee jerk thinkers, 39% is a woefully small number for blaming Republicans. Either way, it would appear that not many middle of the road independent voters are blaming either side right now. More to the point, less than 30% of the public thinks either side's issues are worth shutting the Government down for. So there simply does not seem to be a political win in this situation for anyone who demands we keep it shut down.

If I was the GOP, I would call for daily votes in the Senate on the clean resolution and make the Democrats continue to vote over and over and over to keep it shut. Regardless of who blames who, Americans generally approve of clean resolutions to keep the Government open. If I were the GOP strategists right now, I would be pushing the clean resolution idea to the forefront and stop talking about the specific issues. Hey, let's get the Government back open while we do our jobs hammering out any new deals. I think that is reasonable and will become more reasonable over time.
