NBC says DeSantis claim that he brought home Floridians from Israel was half true

But the Floridians themselves believe it was all true!

“Biden’s neglect has been atrocious,” DeSantis said. “He left them stranded; they couldn’t get flights out. So I scrambled resources in Florida. I sent planes over to Israel, and I brought back over 700 people to safety.”

This is half-true. The Biden administration initially told Americans in Israel to take advantage of commercial flights on Oct. 9, but flights from Israel to the U.S. were scarce, and prices were reportedly as high as $25,000. Some Americans in Israel at the time posted on social media that they were stranded.

On Oct. 12, DeSantis signed an executive order that allowed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to pay for Americans in Israel to fly back to the U.S. The flights, however, were organized by the Tampa-based nonprofit group Project Dynamo, which specializes in rescuing Americans in distress, and DeSantis’ primary role was to fund the flights.

The Floridians who came over on these flights have largely stated that they were contacted and walked through the situation by people from the Governor's office. The coordination that was required to get both the stranded people and the airplanes to the areas in question was done by the Governors office. The flights may have been coordinated by the non-profit, but that doesn't mean that the Governor and his office were not involved.

Oh and there is little reason to believe that Project Dynamo was going to be doing this on their own. The one thing about managing or about governing is that you need to get the most qualified and best people involved. The fact that DeSantis secured a group that "specializes" in this sort of thing should be seen as a good thing (not a bad thing). Management doesn't mean doing everything yourself. Perhaps the fact checkers should have pointed out that DeSantis did not fly any of the planes himself as well?

The reality either way is that the Biden Administration "could" have done something similar to secure the safety of American citizens, but either chose not to or did not know how to go about it. DeSantis did choose to do so and was perfectly capable of figuring out how to bring them back.
