Closing statements this morning and it should go to the jury today.
By all accounts, the defense was lackluster at best and most of the defense argument has fallen apart. Pretty much all of the standards required to prove murder have been achieved and none of the elements of self defense were proven. That being said, who know what will happen when the jury goes out.
I wouldn't be shocked to see a plea deal after closing arguments, but the prosecution may not want to accept anything less than a guilty verdict.
The thing about these racially charged trials is that it brings out the worst (or possibly the truest) behavior in people. To watch black clergy people support the idea of murdering white kids for "putting their hands on black kids" is truly eye-opening. To watch people call Austin Metcalf all sorts of names and accuse him of all sorts of behavior that was not alleged much less proven at the trial is sickening. When everything becomes about black and white, then it is not about right or wrong... which I guess is the way some people want it.

The repeat offender who stabbed Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska to death aboard a Charlotte, N.C., commuter train last year is incompetent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
Presiding Federal Judge Kenneth Bell found that Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr did not understand the proceedings and would be unable to assist in his defense. Brown is up on federal charges of terrorist attacks and other violence against mass transportation systems, in large part because state and local courts kept releasing him, despite a long history of violence and mental illness.
He's also up on state charges of first-degree murder.

What these sorts of trials expose is why we have way more young black people going to jail than any other race. I cannot even begin to count the amount of (black) people on X demanding that a shove allows you to kill someone. Not disagreeing with the facts, but disagreeing with what is actually right or wrong. You read over and over about "not touching a black boy" or you will end up dead like Metcalf. I read numerous people gloating over the fact that it is better to go to jail than to be dead as if the lesson is for "white people" to learn, not the other way around.
