Judge Hannah Dugan still has license to practice law?

Apparently the will of the jury of her peers is not as important as the politics of the people in charge.

"Having considered the motion and the response, the court concludes, in the exercise of its discretion under SCR 22.20(1), that a summary suspension of Attorney Dugan’s license to practice law in Wisconsin is not warranted under the facts of this matter."

Not only that, but this was a 5-2 decision. It wasn't even all that close.

To recap, Dugan was charged with and found guilty of a felony under Federal Law. The average prison sentence for this crime and for someone like Dugan who has never committed any other crimes is 16 months. She could have served up to 5 years for this particular crime. However, she served no time, her entire sentence was a $5000 fine, and at least for now she gets to keep her license to practice law. One might believe that these sorts or suspensions of licencing is not up for debate, but apparently it is.

The hubris of our legal profession is over the top here folks. Their job is to serve the people and the people made the proper determination that Dugan should be held accountable for a crime she openly admits to committing.
