Is DeSantis taking it a bit too far?

Ron DeSantis is moving to ban certain pro-Palestinian groups from college campuses

Ron DeSantis is definitely a populist. Almost to the point of being a bit toxic about it. Banning Palestinian groups that have supported the recent terror attacks in Israel certainly seems like a good idea in a knee jerk sort of way. In fact, I am not sure that expelling students who openly cheer the killing of babies, the raping of women, and the kidnapping of innocent civilians would not be a popular move.

But as pointed out here. There are still certain First Amendment concerns, especially for a political party that has been all in on the concept of free speech and have relentlessly attacked any Government sponsored censorship. I believe that there are certain "behaviors" that can (and should be) punished in this situation, I don't see how banning groups in general falls into the overall argument against Government censorship. Republicans cannot follow the lead from Democrats in the tried and true "what is good for the goose is not good for the gander" message of hypocrisy. Either you are for free speech and against government sponsored censorship or you are not. I don't see that there should be much grey area here and Republicans need to stay black and white on this one.

As much as the knee jerk response seems valid here, we have to balance whether or not going all in on to censor these antisemitic messages is the right call when you are already supposed to be all in on freedom of speech. Moving past the initial reaction here, my more nuanced thought is 180 degrees different. Let these groups be antisemitic. Let them cheer the killing of babies and the raping of women. Let them show the world who they really are. Then they can be judged. If that means that more of them lose employment opportunities after they have been exposed as hateful bigots, then so be it. Perhaps it is better for everyone one involved to be heard so we know what sort of people we are dealing with rather than to hide them away in a corner only to be heard amongst themselves.

This whole Israeli terrorist attack and the almost surreal reaction of support from so many people has really opened up the eyes of many Americans to what sort of hate we really have in this country. Not the fake hate (like white supremacy) that the left wants you to believe is responsible for all of the discord in America. But the real hate that actually exists out in the open and has now been exposed for everyone to see.

Like Anne Frank, trapped for two years in an attic because any outdoor public breath would mean capture and death — and captured anyway because someone in the house below the attic ratted the Frank family out.
Stay inside.
Like the pianist Władysław Szpilman, played by Adrien Brody in “The Pianist” 20 years ago, who did not talk to another person for more than a year as he remained silent and all but motionless in a room in Warsaw after his family was deported to and slaughtered at Treblinka.
In my 62 years of life, I have thought every day of the blessing America has been to the Jewish people — a blessing unlike any my people have ever known.
