I generally stay away from Facebook politics for a reason

I was rummaging through Facebook last night when I stumbled on to a 40 comment thread about the New York Trial.

The thread was started over the idea that Trump has broken the gag order but quickly escalated into the entire concept of the overall trial. I find it mindboggling that people have so little clue as to what is actually happening in New York. Not only no clue as to the ramifications of these prosecutions but not really understanding what Trump is even being charged with. Moreover, the kneejerk comments like "you and I would already be in jail" are frightenly naive.

First, it is Bragg (not the judge) arguing that Trump has violated the gag order, which is specific. Apparently, people believe that neither Trump or his defense team can talk about or complain about anything (which is not the case). So, a couple of people demanded that Trump was getting special treatment (you cannot make this stuff up) because the Judge was not sanctioning him for complaining about not being given the witness list for upcoming witnesses. One suggested that it has "already been proven" that his actions and words during the trial are putting people in danger. Not sure where that came from.

But that is just the start. The ignorance regarding the charges is astounding. There was a person who argued that Trump is being charged because he never really paid for the NDA. There was reference to election cheating. One demanded that Bragg was making up for "inaction" by the other jurisdictions. Several just made remarks about Trump personally and offered that he should be in jail (or that the hoped he went to jail). Any attempts to offer anything rational was challenged as "defending Trump".

That being said, there seemed to be about a 50-50 breakdown of people who were against Trump and for Bragg and those who were for Trump and against Bragg. I think some of the Trump supporters were a little closer to understanding the case, but still confused. One person suggested that Bragg was taking a federal misdemeanor and manifesting it into 31 state felonies. Close? Sure. But it was actually a state misdemeanor that passed the statute of limitation that he turned into 34 felonies by suggesting Trump broke a federal campaign law.

At the end of the day, people are dangerously naive and are becoming more and more tribalistic. This is not boding well for our future folks.
