The reason is obvious. He doesn't think a DC jury will find him guilty because of his last name and he is likely correct.
What is so exasperating about the situation is that there is literally no defense here. He admittedly bought the gun. He admittedly lied on the application (which was the crime). He admits to breaking the law in question but still pleads not guilty.
That being said, Michael Sussman (who was an attorney for Hillary Clinton) openly and brazenly lied to the FBI when he presented them with the infamous Steele Dossier. The lies were not even denied. Instead Sussman simply suggested that the FBI should have known he was lying to them, as his lies were so obvious.
The Jury acquitted Sussman in less than two hours. When asked, the foreperson suggested that the FBI had better things to do than charge people with lying to them. I bet this foreperson did not feel the same way about General Flynn or other conservatives who were charged and punished for simply "misleading" the FBI. Which turned out to be telling the truth, but in a way the FBI didn't like.
So Biden will go to court. 12 DC Democrats will sit in a jury box, ignore the evidence, and find Hunter not-guilty of what he has already admitted to doing,
