Here is what I do not understand.

Why are liberals defending the concept of people working 50-60 hours a week for less than 15K a year?

I read a story about an "undocumented worker" who was telling the sob story about how he is afraid of being deported and no longer feels safe going to the job he has worked at in the hospitality industry. Now on top of the idea that he is currently scared of being deported, the story pulls at your heartstrings by suggesting that he has been here for years, and in spite of working long hours (50-60/week) he has never earned more than 15K in a year. He is plugging away at a $5.00/hour job... you know... just to try to make a better life for himself.

Of course, had this same individual came to America on a work visa, he would be paid minimum wages, with benefits, and would not be hiding out from ICE. But why do things legally, when you can go to California or other places and do things illegally. Obviously, coming here and earning real wages with benefits as a legal person here in the country is no way to make your life better. Apparently the only real way to do this is to break the law by coming here illegally and then let some company illegally pay you under the table.

Now if anyone believes that the politicians are in this argument for the little guy and not in this for the people making the money exploiting these people, then I have a bridge in New York to sell you. This is all about cheap labor and making sure that the people employing them are maximizing profits. You hear all the time that these are doing jobs that Americans don't want to do. Well perhaps part of this is the fact that they are not being paid even minimum wage and are obviously not getting any benefits. If the work (hospitality, agricultural, etc...) paid decent wages and were on the up and up, who knows how many Americans might actually want these jobs. But if Democrats have their way, we will never know. Because somehow, for some reason, we need to keep these illegals working under the table for 15K a year. You know... just because?
