Apparently Hamas had their chance to regroup and now want to start to fight again!
Who could have seen this coming? Well anyone who doubts that Hamas is actually looking for a peaceful two state coexistence with Israel would have seen it. The release of a few hostages (while obviously important for those involved) was little more than a stall tactic. Hamas was hoping to catch their breath and put more pressure on Israel to simply back off.
Some (such as Andrew McCarthy) suggested it would be nearly impossible for Israel to just reengage the war after a week of not fighting. But sometimes I think legal experts like McCarthy should stick to legal opinions. That being said, his opinion was shared by many.
I never felt that Israel was going to cave into international pressure and quit fighting. I fully expect that the IDF would get back to it eventually. I see them as fully committed to at the very least take out the infrastructure (which will be much easier than taking out Hamas themselves). That is something tangible that can be measured and serves two purposes. One, it will make Hamas less effective. Two, it will continue to expose the lies of Hamas that they are not building bunkers and tunnels under hospitals and other civilian areas.
The only problem was that the week gave Hamas a chance to hunker down in other positions in southern Gaza. It simply makes the war that much harder and will likely mean more civilian casualties are coming.
Now, I doubt that much the international community will care much either way if Hamas is exposed. But for those on the fence Americans, it should help sway people over to the Israeli side here. There is a lot of gaslighting being done here and these sorts of tangible provable situations where the gaslighting is exposed can certainly help Israel's cause where it is possible to be helped. On the flip side, Hamas is counting on the idea that the international community (the antisemites) will care if more Palestinian civilians are injured. While deep down everyone knows Hamas is to blame, they will still take the opportunity to blame Israel.
Hamas has executed several hostages they brought into Gaza since October 7th.
Some of whom were executed during the ceasefire everyone in the world was cheering.
We're done talking now.
Shabbat shalom.
