Court rules Texas map is race based gerrymandering.

They apparently don't like the fact that the minority majority districts may not vote for Democrats.

What is interesting about this is that Texas did actually create the required amount of minority majority districts. The problem is that most of these districts will vote GOP. They basically eliminated minority majority districts that would vote Democrat and replaced them with minority majority districts that would vote Republican. The lawsuit points to a letter from DOJ that instructed the to eliminate the four minority majority districts that currently voted Democrat. The court ruled that this was a violation of the voting right act because they redistricted based on race and not on partisan interest.
The problem is that it is entirely possible that this ruling will hold up because the is no guarantee that the USSC will step in before the maps need to be finalized. This would be two courts that have will ultimately remove as many as six GOP seats. The USSC has stated over and over that the Federal courts do not have the power to overrule state legislatures on districting maps, in spite of the fact that everyone sues over maps and the courts almost always seem to step in. The USSC apparently holds very little sway over district and even appellate court judges anymore. These lower court judges seem more inclined as ever to just ignore the precedents and continue to rule however they want.
