Cassidy defeated in GOP primary.

Trump went after him personally after he voted to convict Trump on his impeachment.

“When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to,” Cassidy said. “But you don’t pout, you don’t whine. You don’t claim the election was stolen… You don’t manufacture some excuse.”

Trump is having a hell of a primary season. The vast majority of the primary challengers he has endorsed have beaten the incumbent, Cassidy being the most recent. We will see of Thomas Massie ends up on the list as well. That might be the guy who Trump really wants to see lose.

Back to Cassidy.

Trump called the Senator a disloyal disaster and openly called for his ouster. Not too surprisignly, the disloyal disaster came in last in the primary, missing the runoff that will be held between Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming. Letlow is likely favored as she got 45% of the vote, just shy of the 50% she needed to avoid a runoff.

Cassidy is the first GOP Senator to lose a primary bid in 14 years. He spent $20 million in his losing effort, outspending the rest of the field combined. In typical form, Cassidy now promises to be a bigger thorn in the side of the President during what is left of his lame duck term. Obviously the mask if off and like Thom Tillis, he can stop pretending that he is a loyal Republican.
