Brazil makes it basically illegal for Brazilians to access news through X

They are fining citizens approximately an average year salary for trying to access X through a VPN or other means

The question is whether Brazil’s leftist government can get away with this. The conflict began with demands to censor supporters of the conservative former president Jair Bolsonaro. When X refused the sweeping demands for censorship, including the demand to name of a legal representative who could be arrested for refusing to censor users, the courts moved toward this national ban.

The man behind the effort is Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has aggressively used censorship to combat anything that he or the government deems “fake news” or disinformation. With socialist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, they are the dream team of the anti-free speech movement.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison responded to the ban with a posting declaring “Obrigado Brasil!” or “Thanks, Brazil!” Ironically, he did so on X. (link)

This is how desperate some governments are getting to control what their citizens read and hear about. Better to control every aspect of the news, including the facts, the spin, and what get covered up. Certainly the American left is excited about the prospects of another government giving this sort of censorship a go. Keith Ellison seems happy to use X to celebrate X being censored. Heck, Biden stepped down using X, and several of Harris's big statements on the news are being released on X. Lefties are just not very bright.

In reality, they are not really looking to shut down X as a platform, but rather shut down Musk as the man who runs the platform. Of course, now you have Zuckerberg stepping forward and admitting that the Government asked FB to censor certain materials, that FB went along with it, but that they would no longer allow the Government to bully them back into it. Seems like at least here in the United States, the people running these social media platforms do not see the inherent good of government censorship. Moreover, the idea is losing steam with the general public.

Lastly, our own Democratic Party understands that media censorship needs to be done on the down low, which requires them to be in charge of everything. They know they cannot openly do so, as our constitution, bill of rights, and USSC would put an end to it. Another reason why they would like to rid themselves of all three of those pesky American principals.
