Considering how much money the car companies are losing on the EV market why would they be doing such a thing?
Big automakers want to ask Trump to keep Biden EV mandates in place. Consumers don't want the cars, but the companies have already sunk so much money in EVs to comply with federal regulations. Now, they don't want to compete with gas cars.
Apparently, this has more to do with the subsidies they get to make the cars, and the amount of loss that they can write off on paper to avoid tax liability. So while they will claim that they want the mandate in place (to suggest that it is tied to the environment or something) what they really want is the subsidies to stay in place. The argument that they would eventually make money on all of this new investment if they just could remove competition from the other cars they sell, isn't very convincing. Why does anyone need a mandate to build the cars that they are supposedly wanting to build? Just build them, with or without the subsidies.
The problem, of course, is that all it would take is for one of the three to not go along with voluntarily moving from gas to EV for the other two to start losing market share. The reason is the obvious concept that there not a big enough demand for the EV if it has to compete. The only way it becomes the car of choice is if it is the only car you can choose. So now that these companies have put in their infrastructure to build vehicles that nobody wants, they are trying to figure out a way to make it profitable.
Trump has vowed to reverse the mandate on day one. He states that the mandate will cause people to lose the ability to buy gas cars if that is what they want. The NYT and others demand that this is false, and Trump is just in the pocket of big oil. But that is pretty much the same argument that the car companies are making. They want the EV mandate in place so that they only have to make EVs and are not compete against gas cars. Now the question becomes will Trump stand behind what he suggested, or will he bend to the will of the big three? If I was a betting man, I would say he follows through, and these car companies will have to decide on their own how to deal with the fallout of all the new investment in EV technology.
Look what Musk just started in Texas:
TOC San Joaquin Valley on X: "Watch as @HansCNelson talks Tesla Energy and the new Texas package @tslabeatpodcast with @teslaownersSV @FutureAZA It's Tesla That Collaborates with Utilities for Energy Efficiency (Someone should explain to Tesla that they are doing "Only A Car Company" wrong)🤣 Every Friday 8am https://t.co/rmdleLIg0r" / X
Wouldn't want to be betting against Musk:

No one wants the fucking things. And for the wealthy leftists who do want them for a preening virtue signal, it's a Tesla they desire.
I talked to the VP of Operations at a large Chevy dealer several weeks ago up in New England who told me that GM demanded that they piss away $600,000.00 to become a "Certified EV dealer." And now him and scores of other dealers are demanding their fucking money back. Same with the owner of a large Ford dealership here locally.
Just like flush toilets, gas cans and light bulbs, leftist ideas are always so fucking genius they must be made MANDATORY.
