While some gullible people out there listen to the official explanations from the Government, the actual reasoning was that the Administration didn't want to escalate issues with China. Had nobody actually seen this... they would have let it float back to China. On top of everything else, a balloon of this size could be a biological weapon. Apparently our military didn't take that into account, huh?

“After careful analysis, U.S. military commanders had determined downing the balloon while over land posed an undue risk to people across a wide area due to the size and altitude of the balloon and its surveillance payload,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in the statement Saturday.
So according to Roger... the President works for the Pentagon and not the other way around. I guess Lloyd Austin must have felt that the balloon had some LGBTQ+ people on it... so he didn't dare outrage the GenZers by shooting it down? You know... because there is no open spaces in Alaska or Montana?
