By voting for someone who asks you to vote otherwise... isn't that proof that the person you are voting for does not have the clout to be speaker?
I realize that politics has little, if anything, to do with logic. But if Jim Jordan forcefully nominates Kevin McCarthy, and then dissenters vote against McCarthy, what is the case for Jordan to be speaker? McCarthy already has the other 200-odd Republicans; he needs the dissenters. If Jordan can’t persuade the dissenters to swallow hard and back McCarthy, then what’s the point of bumping McCarthy for Jordan, who likely has materially less support than McCarthy among the non-dissenters? What’s the evidence that, on important votes down the road, Jordan would be any more effective at bringing the dissenters around than he is today?
Reality is that there is no real plan for the dissenters at this point. There is nobody right now for them to rally around, so it begs the question as to what they really are hoping to accomplish?
It was stated in news cycles this morning that some of the dissenters are requesting committee assignments or even committee chairs in exchange for their vote. Others are still pushing demands, some reasonable and some not so much. Is this really about stopping McCarthy or about milking the resistance for other things?
interesting counterpoint
Catturd ™ on Twitter: "90% of the Republican Congress want McCarthy as Speaker. Well over 50% of Republican voters don't want McCarthy as Speaker. And yet, they arrogantly pretend to represent us." / Twitter
definitely true about McConnell
What's McCarthy's plan?
McCarthy: 'The Very First Day, the First Thing We're Going to Do Is Repeal the 87,000 IRS Agents'
now on to the sixth vote... with nobody changing their minds between the 4th and 5th.
This could go on forever... however, there are rumors of Democrats cutting a deal where a bunch of them would vote present and give McCarthy the gavel in exchange for some concessions.
When the opposition cannot even decide on an opposing candidate... well then... what real plan do they have?
It's also being reported that McCarthy is 'negotiating' with the Freedom Caucus.
Why in the ever loving fuck doesn't he BELONG to the Freedom Caucus?
We know why. He's in this for himself, not for the people in his district or any other American.
The asshole has even prematurely moved into the Speakers office.
