A majority of Americans live in a household with a gun

More than half of American voters -- 52% -- say they or someone in their household owns a gun, per the latest NBC News national poll.

That's the highest share of voters who say that they or someone in their household owns a gun in the history of the NBC News poll, on a question dating back to 1999.

Some 55% of voters now believe that “Woke politicians are to blame for rising crime.” With gun control one of the top issues for Democrats going into this election, the polls show a growing gap with a majority of voters on the issue, particularly as crime continues to rise among the top issues for 2024.

Unfortunately there is still more Democrats interested in gun control than Republicans interested in gun rights as it pertains to their voting choices. But that gap is closing and I suspect will close more as crime becomes an even bigger problem.

The top five issues according to a recent Harvard/Politico poll are Inflation, economy/jobs, guns, abortion, and gas prices. Not too surprisingly, the three economic issues are all very favorable for Republicans, while the two hot-button social issues are more favorable for Democrats. One might believe that with over half of Americans being around guns, that the gun control argument would be losing steam faster than it is, but political disconnection is a hard thing to overcome. I suspect that many who own guns that might be compensated based on several proposition probably still believe in gun control because they are stupid.

Speaking of stupid, I find it nearly implausible that "crime" is so far down on this list of voter issues. The Politico poll shows it down at number 9 with health care, racism, and national security ahead of it. Not too surprisingly, the GOP wins the national security and crime issues. while Democrats have an advantage in health care and racism. But how is crime at number 9 with how out of control it is today?

Another shocker is that immigration is almost not an issue according to this poll with only 17% of the country seeing it as important. That seems even more unfathomable than less than one in four caring about the increase in crime. If our American voters really care less about the border issues and the crime wave that has hit our country, then we deserve all the misfortune we get from both issues.

At the end of the day this is simple. Across the board the GOP seems to have distinct advantages to the core issues of the economy and safety of both individual and country. Democrats perform better on the social issues. So is it plausible that a poll commissioned by Politico would find a way to push the social issues (like gun control and abortion) to the head of the line, while demanding that people simply care very little about immigration or crime? It is plausible. I guess we will need to watch for other polls to see if they show the same sort of priorities.

Either way... Bill Clinton still had it right. It's the economy stupid!
